Excerpt from a private letter to an South African correspondent

25th August 1969



            [Here in Folkestone — my favourite among the south-coast resorts — I am taking a short holiday. But the company, as I need hardly tell you — is hardly composed of people I should have chosen.
            What chiefly strikes me in a place like this, with its prevailing noise of more or less genuine laughter, is the low level of wisdom that prevails in any cross-section of modern English people.]
