Rigours of the English climate

Excerpt from a private letter to an South African correspondent

16th February 1970



            [Yes! I am fervently hoping to emigrate. The fact is, I cannot endure the climate here. It is bad enough at any time, even for young people. But at my age it is not only intolerable but also dangerous.
            I am the last surviving male member of my family. All my brothers & sisters are dead, & I lost a first cousin last year. So that I have no ties here, & I am suffering cruelly from the rigours of the climate.
            One has only to live in East Anglia a fortnight in order to understand why England has never been invaded since 1066.!]
